Tropical Storm Irma Remnants

Public Works crews are preparing for remnants of Tropical Storm Irma to reach Memphis this week. The storm could bring high wind, rain and localized flooding.

Depending on the amount and intensity of the wind and rainfall, streets may experience downed trees and flooding. Low-lying areas are most susceptible for flooding for short durations due to drainage systems being overwhelmed. This type of temporary ponding typically ends when heavier rainfall subsides. If such areas do not drain quickly, Public Works Director Robert Knecht asks citizens to notify the City so the issue can be investigated.

FOR MORE INFORMATION OR ASSISTANCE: Contact the Department of Drain Maintenance at 901-357-0100.

City Clears Storm Drains to Prepare for Post-Hurricane Harvey Rainfall in Memphis

City officials are preparing for the lingering effects of Hurricane Harvey, including heavy rainfall and possible flooding to reach Memphis later this week, according to a statement released Monday by the City’s Division of Public Works.

Officials say low-lying areas are the most susceptible to flooding (or temporary ponding) due to overwhelmed drainage systems.

Public Works director Robert Knecht says the City has been working to prevent this and will investigate areas that don’t drain quickly. He asks that citizens notify the City of such areas.
“We have been preparing for the storm by inspecting and clearing storm drains, inlets, and checking other essential areas,” Knecht said. “Crews are working to clean debris-filled storm drains and inlets to help minimize any potential for street flooding.”

For those who have experiences water entering their homes during past heavy rainfall, officials encourage those residents to take preventive measures to reduce the chance of flooding, by clearing gutters, downspouts, and storm drains near their homes.

Storm equipment, as well as personnel are on standby, ready to respond to any flood-related emergencies. Officials say residents can contact the Department of Drain Maintenance at 901-357-0100 for more information or assistance.

Street Paving – Is Your Street Next?

Hi, all. Mayor Strickland wanted to share some news I think you’ll all welcome: With more money for paving in this year’s budget, we’re back on our goal of a 25-year paving cycle for the first time in a decade. Under the mayor’s administration, and with the approval of the City Council, we’re now paving double the lane-miles than we were just four years ago. A little while back, in an effort to continue what we’re doing to be transparent, we built a map that shows where we’ll be paving soon. Public Works recently updated the map in accordance with this year’s additional appropriations for paving, and you can find it here.

<Spoiler Alert> No streets in our neighborhood are scheduled to be repaved.

MPD Seeking Community’s Opinion

The Memphis Police Department is working with Response to Resistance to ensure they are protecting the citizens of Memphis with reasonable use of force techniques. This groundbreaking and forward thinking approach of garnering civilian perspective puts the Department at the national forefront of improving police and community relations. Members of the Memphis community may take the survey at www.responsetoresistance.com.

In October of 2016, all MPD officers took the survey and it is now available to the community. The Response to Resistance Survey was created to support the public safety community and aid their efforts to safeguard the citizens they are sworn to serve and protect. The Survey takes about 8 minutes and presents five different scenarios regarding reaction and response to resistance ranging from simply failing to obey an officer’s instruction to use of a knife or firearm against the officer. The results for both law enforcement and civilians will be analyzed and compared to ensure the use of force techniques adopted by the Department match the way in which the community wants to be protected. Participants simply take the survey and enter the Agency Code “MEMCIV17”.
